The main TAIEX share index closed down 99.48 pointsat 4,491.78. ProMOS shares dropped by their 7 percent dailylimit, while the semiconductor sub-index shed 4.24percent. "Investors are having doubts whether ProMOS could survive inthe longer term. If the DRAM sector continues to worsen andProMOS fails to turn to profit, the loan will eventually be awaste," said Michael On, a managing director of Beyond AssetManagement. Chinese stocks up 3.52% on WedPublished: 15 Jan 2009 02:15:29 PSTJan. 14, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Chinese stocks ended 3.52% higher on Wednesday, boosted by metal and financial stocks.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A shares and B shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, gained 65.50 points to 1928.87 points after fluctuating between 1,929.28 and 1,862.31 points. The Shenzhen Component Index on the smaller Shenzhen Stock Exchange increased 4.30% or 281.06 points to 6,811.87 points, after touching an intraday low of 6,518.85 points. Gainers in the Shanghai market outnumbered decliners by 814 to 10, while 30 were unchanged. Aggregated turnover on the two bourses was RMB 97.193 billion.Bank of China (BOC), one of the country's Big Four banks, gained 2.40% to end at RMB 2.99 after Royal Bank of Scotland decided to sell up to 15 billion H-shares in BOC. Video websites see new opportunity in 3G mobilePublished: 26 Oct 2009 07:02:02 PSTBy Zhao QianMany major video websites have begun to take advantage of the opportunities the 3G market may provide as more users are going online with their mobile phones.Tudou.com, one of the most popular websites in the country, started formally working with China Mobile over the weekend to allow mobile users to view the video site on their phones.When the service launches in November, users will only have to pay a flat fee to have unlimited viewing privileges."At present, users have to upload videos through their personal computers, and some of the videos can be offered on cell phones," Wang Wei, CEO of tudou.com, told the Global Times Monday."And we hope in the future that all users will be able to upload their videos directly onto the channel through their phones," he added."We see big commercial opportunities in the 3G mobile market and are exploring more ways to increase our market share," he said.The number of the country's mobile users broke the 600 million mark in July, according to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.In the middle of October, tudou.com launched its first video widget software for Nokia mobiles, which requires users to download and set it up on their phones by themselves."We are also negotiating with some mobile producers to set up built-in software on the phones before they go to market," Wang added.Youku.com, another well-known video website, has already teamed up with Nokia and Sony Ericsson to set up their video software on 3G cell phones before they are released."This is more convenient for the users because they don't need to set up the video software by themselves," Yao Jian, chief technology officer of youku.com, told the Global Times, "and the built-in software could make watching videos on phones easier."But Yao admitted that offering video services on mobile phones is much more complicated than on the Internet because of differing technology and equipment.Currently, youku is offering their mobile video services for free. China Merchants Property's shares dive on share sale planPublished: 25 Nov 2008 02:07:02 PSTNov. 25, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Shares of China Merchants Property Development Co Ltd (CMPD) plummeted by the 10% daily limit after disclosing the secondary offering plan. CMPD's shares closed at RMB 13.75 on Monday, extending this year's loss to 66%. The Shenzhen-listed real estate developer, announced yesterday it would issue up to 450 million A-shares, or 48.5% of the company's total outstanding A-shares, to both institutional and individual investors on Nov. 26 at RMB 13.2 apiece, according to its filling with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.The company expects to raise as much as RMB 5.94 billion via the share offering, about 74.25% of the previously planned RMB 8 billion, to help fund 14 commercial and residential projects, involving a total investment of RMB 17.142 billion. It will also test peripherals such as printers and digital cameras.Microsoft will grant a "Windows 7" logo to compatible PCs and a "compatible with Windows 7" logo to compatible peripherals. ICBI to lend RMB 100 billion to China Southern Power GridPublished: 20 Mar 2009 00:48:22 PSTMar. 20, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the world's largest lender by market value, will extend an RMB 100 billion (US$14.64 billion) credit line to China Southern Power Grid (CSG), the second-largest power distributor in the nation, according to a strategic cooperation agreement signed on Mar. 12.The state-owned power company, which aims for a 5% increase in electricity sales in 2009, announced earlier that it plans to spend RMB 71 billion on 20 key projects this year. Jinan Iron and Steel suffered decline in profit in 2008Published: 09 Mar 2009 18:34:55 PSTMar. 9, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Jinan Iron and Steel Co Ltd, a major domestic steel producer in East China's Shandong Province, said it realized over RMB 780.6 million in net profit in 2008, 60.13% less than its profit one year earlier, the Shanghai Daily reported.According to the company's 2008 annual report, the steel producer realized around RMB 43.18 billion in operating income, up 21.38% year on year. Earnings per share (EPS) were RMB 0.55. The company will issue a dividend of about RMB 0.5 per 10 shares (including tax) to all shareholders.The company attributed the profit decline to the sharp decrease in both domestic and overseas demand amid the global financial crisis.
